Sonny's Escape

Sonny may look sweet (she is) and innocent (she isn't) on the outside, but she is mischievous to her core.

When we lived with my parents for a short time pre-Ridgemont, she would find any hole in their backyard fence to escape from.  I can't even guess how many times we were out there looking for her, listening for her collar jingle-jangle beyond the fence, and how many patches my poor dad had to make to try and keep her inside.  She always escaped, and we always found her.

I mentioned that our new backyard is only partially fenced, and because Brock and Sonny have a new fondness for chasing the birds and wild bunnies that frolic in the yard, we put them on their leashes when they go out to potty.  Normally I've got Camden in my right arm/on my right hip and a leash in each hand.  It really is a sight.  Brock is an idiot, but listens pretty well.  Sonny is mischievous and doesn't listen particularly well.  You see where this is going, yes?

Yesterday evening, right after Ryan got home from his seventh consecutive 12-hour shift, I started dinner when he went up to shower.  Both puppies were sitting at the deck door so I grabbed Camden and their leashes and made a big, big mistake.  Normally, I either put their leashes on while still inside or they are good little puppies and wait while I put their leashes on immediately after stepping outside.  Not today.

The door opened and they both took off.  And I mean, took off, heading right for the line of trees that stands between our backyard and a ravine.

I ran down the steps and into the yard, almost stepping on a playing-possum-rat (gah!) yelling at both dogs to come back.  Brock, bless his big, dopey heart, stopped at the tree line, obeyed and came right to me.  Sonny ran into the trees and didn't look back.

I stood there, looking like an idiot, calling her name, and could still hear her collar jingle-jangling, then confident that she would hear the tone in my voice and come back with a proud smile on her face.  Nothing.

I ran up into the house, put Brock inside, and came back out with treats (and Camden in the Ergo) thinking that she would certainly be lured out by the sound of me shaking the treat bucket.  No collar jingle-jangle.  Nothing.  The I'm-about-to-lose-it-lump started it's creep up my throat because I knew exactly what was (or wasn't?) beyond the trees.  The ravine.

I started to panic and kept yelling her name, my voice really starting to shake.  I went next door to ask permission to go look in their backyard.  I kept shaking the bucket and calling her name, stopping every few seconds to try and hear the jingle-jangle I so desperately wanted to hear.  Nothing.  Ugly crying commences.

Ryan joined in the search (just what he wanted to do after another long day at work), and I don't know if it was because he was so tired or what, but he was emotionless.  Emotionless as if he was preparing for us not to find her.  Forget ugly crying, I was hysterical.

I kept calling her and calling her.  Nothing.  No rustling of bushes, no jingle-jangle.  Nothing.  Just the image in my head of her falling down the ravine and me becoming exponentially more panicked with each passing minute.  For every time I called her name, Camden would echo with "Shu-She" and I became even more hysterical at the thought of him losing his Shu-She.

About 15 minutes into the search, I called my parents for reinforcements.  I don't really recall the conversation with my mom, but somehow she understood my words through my sobs and said they would be right over.

I ended up going to three different neighbors houses, asking I could look in their backyards, and giving them a quick description of what she looks like.  They were all very nice and obliging to the crazy-hysterical woman who's child wasn't wearing pants (sorry, Cammy).  Each one of them was quick to point out that, "You know if she goes down the ravine... She's not coming back up."  All I could do was swallow what I really wanted to say and respond with, "That's what I'm afraid of." In case you were wondering, what I really wanted to say was, "THANKS, EFFING ASSHOLE!  I HADN'T CONSIDERED THAT POSSIBILITY!" They also let us know that bears, coyotes, mountain lions, and big daddy raccoons roam the woods surrounding our neighborhood. Fabulous.

More "Shu-She" calling, more bucket shaking, more time passing.  Nothing.  Except more hysterics, hyperventilation, feeling nauseated, and every few seconds Camden giving my mid-section a little squeeze with his arms (which by the way, he'll never know how precious and perfectly timed those squeezes were).

For whatever reason, I kept going back to this one section of our neighbor's yard.  They had a small rock wall dividing their yard from the ravine, and behind the wall growing on what small amount of land left was a bunch of bushes.  There was a small path/opening beside the wall where they could drop their yard clippings.  Standing in that opening and feeling totally defeated, I shook the bucket again.  And guess what I heard?  The faintest little jingle-jangle.  All shakiness left my voice and I called her name.  More jingle-jangle and the slightest rustling of bushes.

From wherever Ryan was looking, he could hear the change in my calls and came over with my parents. I did the really stupid thing, of course, and went into the opening to stand on some seriously unstable pile of yard debris, calling her name, trying to encourage her to come out.  I could hear her trying to move and could tell she was stuck.  Ryan, the hero, came over and ventured out further to try and see her, and he spotted her right away.  She was so far back (and stuck) in these bushes that I had to go get our hedge clippers so Ryan could cut his way into her.  He got her out, handed her to my dad, and then my dad helped pull Ryan out.  It was like our own damn 45-minute search and rescue mission.

We headed back towards the house and once my heart started beating regularly I sat down on the grass and said that since I knew she was alive, I was going to kill her.  Just kidding.  But I really did say that.

Once everyone was back inside, and Sonny in timeout, I kept thinking that this little search and rescue mission could have ended differently, and I forced myself to just focus on the fact that we found her.  She's ok.  Perspective really set in when I realized, she's a frigging dog (who we love very much, obbbbbbviously), and cannot begin to imagine how indescribably awful it would be if I thought I'd lost Camden.  I won't even go there.

So, you might be asking yourself - did she just blog about losing her dog for 45 minutes?  Yes, I did.  Was it a dramatic and traumatic experience?  Hell yes.  But, trust me when I said that I also realize it pales in comparison to others misfortunes.  Sometimes, with everything we have going on in life, I have very little patience left for these dogs.  This experience served as a good reminder of how much I love them both and how important they are to our family. I wrote out this dramatic manifesto because I want to be able to look back on these 45 minutes someday, maybe someday when Sonny isn't around anymore, and laugh at how big of a little shit she was.

And how Camden called her "Shu-She."

Our Four-Legged Babies

You know what this little space has been missing the last eight months?

Our four-legged babies.

You know, the ones that had to realize that they are dogs and not actually humans.  I'll wait while you gasp at the realization, too.

I was never worried about how they would be around a baby because they (Brock especially) love kids.  Brock is a gentle giant that really just wants to lick/slobber people to death.  Sonny just wants to be cuddled and snuggled.  And she just might pee on you a little bit from the excitement.

My concern was how they would do not being the center of our home life.  Would they be jealous?  Act out and misbehave?

At first, there was a lot of curiosity, lots of sniffing.  Lots of looks at us like, "Who is this small person and when the hell is he leaving?"  We sensed some jealousy - mostly from Sonny.  Thankfully, the jealousy quickly passed and no serious misbehaving has gone on.

3 or 4 day old Camden and Sonny Jo

In the last couple months, Camden has really started to notice both pups.

He climbs all over Brock (which you know that puppy loves) and tries to grab Sonny's snout and tail anytime he can.  I always try to sit closely when he's trying to play with her, just in case I need to run interference.  Her ears are always down/back, but because she is a small dog - I know she may be more likely to nip at him if he tugged too hard.  Or if she had just plain old had enough of him.  So far, she seems to just love the attention.

Brock, who's always been our protector, has taken on protecting Camden without missing a step. He's like his giant, four-legged shadow.  Some nights we've been unable to find Brock, only to find that he's snuck into Camden's room and is laying next to the crib.  Protecting him while he sleeps.  Or so I like to think.

It is going to be so fun to watch these three grow up together.

10 on 10: January 2013

10 on 10: 10 pictures on the 10th day of the month!
Document a snapshot of your life & find beauty among the ordinary things in your day!

We'll call this: 10 on 10 - the Camden edition.

[1] Good morning, Mama!  A happy boy in his swing.

[2] Morning milk coma.  One of several for the day.

[3] Walk/jog time.  Today there may have even been more jogging than walking?

[4] My walk/jog buddy.  He's the strong, silent type - not much in the motivator department.

[5] Hard to believe I will be opening this package tomorrow for a little 1 month photo shoot.

[6] Mama and baby snuggles were plentiful today.  My kind of day.

[7] Nakey baby.

[8] I am a sucker for clothes with animal faces on the feet or butt.

[9] Another milk coma for the wild man.

[10]  This lady gave me an interesting afternoon.  I swear she and Brock schemed up a little diversion project to get my attention.  My mom stopped by and Brock got so excited he flew through the house and knocked over a full bowl of water.  While Mom and I were distracted, Sonny escaped out the front door.  It took us several minutes to even realize she was gone and several more minutes to locate her.  I was the crazy lady running up and down our street, shaking her treats, and shouting her name.  Dogs.

This Weekend...

A tad late, but here I am nonetheless.

This weekend we got a gas insert installed to our previously super-crummy fireplace.  You bet your booty that I broke out in a very-pregnant-lady happy dance.  The puppies were looking at both me and the fireplace with serious concern.

This weekend I got Brock in the Christmas spirit.  Against his will.

This weekend we spent 30 minutes picking out the perfect Christmas tree.  And I had on flip flops.  Not the brightest idea I've had.

This weekend I decorated our tree with direction from Clark, who kept insisting that I put more ornaments on the tree and even suggested we run out for some tinsel.  This man has the fever.  I draw the line at tinsel.

This weekend my favorite newly-engaged-world-travelers came over and shot some video for our pregnancy video.

This weekend we went and saw the production of Annie at a local community theater.  There was one actress that Rachel and I completely agreed was a Brittany S. Pierce doppelganger... Just not as fortunate in the dancing or coordination department.

This weekend I hit 38 weeks in my pregnancy.  Less than two weeks to go, people!  I cannot wait to meet this baby boy.  And decide on his name.

This Weekend...

Linking up with Sar and Syndal for This Weekend I...

This weekend I got an extra day off of work for Columbus Day.  Glorious.

This weekend I plowed through my financial management project that isn't due until finals week in December.  I decided I just couldn't have that hanging over my head any longer.

This weekend I (OK, we) hung the rest of the decor in the nursery.  There is just one piece left that can't go up until we decide on this little dude's name.

This weekend I discovered that our sweet neighbor leaves treats for Brock and Sonny in her newspaper mailbox.

This weekend I hit the 30 week mark in my pregnancy.  Time is flying.  For reals.

This weekend I officially started Christmas shopping.  Like my semester project, I just can't let things like this hang over my head as we get closer and closer to baby time.

This Weekend...

Linking up with Sar and Syndal for This Weekend I...

This weekend I spent several hours working on my financial homework.  I felt a little head rest itself on my shoulder and a little cold nose nudge my neck.  I think she was hoping I would stop and pay attention to her.

This weekend I was reminded how weird (and sometimes human-like) dogs are.

This weekend I watched as my hubby spent time with one of his oldest and best friends.  Hubby was happy.  Be still my heart.

This weekend I showed our out-of-town guests around Port Townsend and Fort Warden State Park.  The sun flare was just a bonus.  And now I really want to watch An Officer and A Gentleman.

This weekend I officially failed at Haus of Girls' #44milesinSeptember challenge.  Our Florida vacay killed it... But I'm not complaining.  It was worth it.

This weekend I hit my 29th week of pregnancy.  And was reminded by my OB that I am now one week away from the 10-week countdown.  Holy shiza.

And now, I'm trying to drown my sore throat and congestion in lemon ginger tea.  Awesome.

This Weekend...

This weekend I...

Linking up with Sar and Syndal for This Weekend I...

This weekend I watched my niece Kennedy play soccer.  She spent more time watching the spectators (to make sure we were watching her) than she did the ball.  But, Kenny was totally adorable.  She wears the same colors that Rachel and I did growing up - a lovely combo of orange and black. #nostalgic

This weekend we started mounting some of the wall decor in the nursery.  All of these little things and baby steps make this baby thing feel like it's really real.

This weekend the morning light coming out of the nursery (and into the hallway) caught my eye.  And I am so happy it did.

This weekend Brock, Sonny, and I met up with my girlfriend, Jessica, and her dogs Maggie and Scout for a walk.  It's safe to say that Brock and I may have experienced our last walk together until this pregnancy is complete.  I pulled a muscle in my quad/groin trying to wrangle him, and I'm pretty sure my left arm is now an inch (or six) longer than my right.

This weekend I officially reached the third trimester and this baby boy is the size of an eggplant.  My mother-in-law gave me props for coordinating my fleece and the produce.

This weekend Ryan and I were watching Jurassic Park and got into a discussion about our favorite dinosaurs.  Uh, what? #weirdos

Dear Monday

Linking up with Megan for Dear Monday!

Dear Monday, Even a three-day weekend wasn't enough rest for me to be able to come at you full force.  We'll try again next week.

Dear Fall Semester, Ugh. Up until today I felt motivated and ready for the semester to begin. My motivation has quickly faded and I am now intimidated after reading through my syllabi. Why did I want to go back to school, again?

Dear Ocean Get-Away, You were far more relaxing than either Ryan or I anticipated.  Strolling on the beach, searching for sand dollars, and just chatting was exactly what I needed.

The lovebirds

Pretty sand ripples

Dear Brock & Sonny, Apparently this morning I failed to close the cage doors before leaving for work.  Luckily Grandpa came to check on you.  Oopsie.

Dear Florida and Favorite In-Laws, Only two and a half weeks until our vaca.  This lady is super excited.

Dear Hubby, I'd say that yesterday you had the man day of man day's. You purchased a new set of golf clubs and ate crab legs at Hooters. It doesn't get much better than that, does it?

Take Luck,

15 Fun Facts

Day 1 of Sar's 15 Day Challenge!
Hmmm.  Fifteen fun facts about myself.  This should be interesting.

[1] When I first read this prompt, I immediately thought of the movie "Eurotrip" and the part when Cooper says to Jamie, "Here's a fun fact.  You made out with your sister, man!"  I have a wild tendency to make these sort of connections.
[2] I like looking up movie trivia on IMBD.
[3] My feet are very ticklish.  This makes pedicures super fun.
[4] I am extremely noise sensitive.  I hate the sound of fingernails being cut/clipped or filed on an Emory board, forks scraping on a plate, and gum chomping/snapping.  Not only that, but once I hear a noise that irritates me - I cannot block it out or get it out of my head.  It just gets louder and louder.  I've considered seeking hypno-therapy for this issue.
[5] I have kept a planner since the 7th grade.
[6] I prefer to sleep with one leg outside of the covers.
[7] My little sister and I love to sing Broadway show tunes.  Once, when we were on the ferry (and apparently in our own little world) we were deep into a number from Mamma Mia when an older gentleman interrupted us and asked if we were auditioning for the play.  Embarrassing.
[8] I spend one hour every Sunday preparing Brock's food for the week.
[9] While playing softball in college - I played every position in the infield at one point or another.
[10] My favorite snack is tortilla chips, sour cream, and salsa.
[11]  I share a birthday with my nephew, Liam.
[12] Only recently did I finally catch the joke in Dumb & Dumber when the cop tells Harry and Lloyd to "pull over" and Harry responds, "No, it's a cardigan - but thanks for asking!"
[13]Sometimes I talk to our dogs like they are people.
[14] Two of my favorite shows are Dexter and Weeds.  Is it wrong that I love two shows that happen to be about a serial killer and drug dealer?

[15] If I could quit my job and become a professional photographer - I totally would.

Did you learn anything new about me that you didn't already know?

Puffy Lip

So, I work what we call a compressed work schedule and am lucky enough to have every-other Friday off of work.  Because of my brother and sister-in-law's work schedule (and perhaps the close proximity of our homes) I watch Mia, Kennedy, and Riley in the afternoons on those very Fridays.

I made the mistake of taking the three rascals to Baskin Robbins a few Fridays ago.  They had been behaving very well, so I thought they deserved a little reward.  It didn't seem like a mistake at the time, but as soon as I walked in the house this Friday - Kennedy was all about another Baskin Robbins trip.

I obliged because... Well, I love ice cream.

We were a troupe of happy people, although Mia elected not to have her photo taken.

4 years old.  Head tilt down pat.

Blue eyes.  Curly hair.  "Warwen."  Love this boy.
After ice cream they insisted on being taken to our house so they could see their second favorite person (second to me, of course!) - Uncle Ryan!  We got to our house and they greeted Uncle (or Aunt as Riley calls him) Ryan with big hugs and smiles and they headed straight for the dogs.

Brock and Sonny love everyone, so I never worry about them.  The only thing I do worry about is Brock being overly-friendly and knocking the kids down or licking them to death.  Brock immediately ran towards Riley with his tongue hanging out and the look on that little boy's face was pure terror.  I scooped him up and encouraged him to focus on the more-his-size, little Sonny.

I ended up just leaving poor Brock in his cage.  The poor dog is just too intense sometimes and doesn't realize how big he is.

Now is a good time to totally switch gears and say that we had to take our laundry room door off in order to fit our new washer and dryer.  There's plenty of room for me to do my laundry-goddess duties, but not enough room to have a door.  After Ryan took the door off its hinges, he laid it on top of Brock's cage - only placing it there for the time being.

Well, come Friday.  The door was still there.

So, Sonny was chasing Riley.  Kennedy was chasing Sonny.  I was  seconds away from saying, "OK, guys.  Enough running and chasing."

It was then that Kennedy ran smack (and I mean, smack) into the laundry room door.  It wiped her clean on her feet and she grabbed her little mouth.  My heart instantly sank and broke and I'm yelling inside, "Not on my watch!"

She was crying, or trying to cry, but no sound was coming out. I scooped up Kenny and (trying so hard to keep my composure in hopes to not freak her out more) squeezed her tight.  I made a pit stop to grab some ice cubes and a washcloth, then we went into the bathroom.

The first thing I wanted to check was to make sure all of her little teeth were still attached.  Hallelujah, they were!  She saw some blood on her little hand and started crying even more, but I wiped it off with lightening speed and assured her that she was going to be fine.  She had only cut her lip.

Riley and Aunt/Uncle Ryan came into the bathroom for some comedic relief and we were on our way to settling down.  Well, she was.  Within minutes she was fine, but I was far from fine.

I am a great Auntie.  I am responsible, always try to do fun things with them (hello, park trips and ice cream!), play with them, don't let them run-a-muck (besides this momentary lapse) and discipline them when necessary.  And now, I've let my sweet niece get a cut and puffy lip.

We went back home to wait for Haley, my sister-in-law, and I couldn't wait to tell her what happened.  I was so afraid of what she (not to mention my brother!) was going to say.

In the mean time, Kennedy, Riley, and I went and rode bikes outside.  I asked Kennedy if I could take a picture of her little puffy lip, and of course she agreed.

Pointing to the puffy lip.

Her "sad face."
Do not let this Hollywood-actress-in-the-making fool you.  Immediately after I took this picture, she wanted to see it and proclaimed (with a little too much pride), "That's my sad face!!" and went on riding her little tricycle... All smiles and yelling at her little brother.

Haley came home and I told her what happened, and told her how terribly awful I felt.  She laughed at me and told me how Kennedy fell out of a hammock last weekend and split her lip open then, too - making this look like nothing.  I must say that made this Auntie feel a little better, but only a little.

While I was leaving, Kennedy assured me that she still loves me.  Puffy lip and all.

I'd say we need to do a little child-proofing of our house before their next visit.

Dear Monday

Linking up with Megan for Dear Monday
Dear Monday, Not only did I come to work late today, but I left early.  It was glorious.  I do, however, wish that I hadn't passed our department head on my way in and out.  Either that or I should have shouted a disclaimer, "I swear I have approved leave!"

Dear New Samsung Washer and Dryer, Uhm hello!  I love you already.  You are sleek and fabulous, and make the cutest little chiming noise when you finish washing and drying our clothes.  The best part is that this noise is very intriguing to the Brocky Boy and he tilts his head at the sound of it.

Dear Brock, Speaking of you.  Stop tormenting Sonny.  The last two mornings you have caused her to hide underneath the bed and refuse to come out.  This is a game I am growing very tired of.

Dear Webb Family, I ordered some of Liam's six-month (what the what?!) photos from snapfish.  They arrived today and I quickly ripped open the envelope to see my new treasures.  I did not, repeat, did not foresee the tears/waterworks that came from holding those precious photos in my hand.

Dear Keilani Ricketts, I think all of us (watching the Women's Softball College World Series) would appreciate it if you stopped chomping your gum like a grazing cow.  Mmkay?  You are a total rock star, but you should mind yo manners on national television.

Dear Hubby, The other night when choosing a movie, you chose Tangled because you knew I would enjoy it.  You singing along was just icing on the cake.  Thank you for being adorable, and for being you.
